“Of course there is,” the man said respectfully. “I’ve had someone clean up and set aside the best spots for you all.”
Jiang Hua nodded and looked at Tong Sui, asking, “Have you eaten enough?”
Tong Sui nodded.
Only then did the group stand up and walk out of the cafeteria.
As Tong Sui was about to leave the cafeteria, he noticed a shadow darting out in front of him.
The shadow clung to Jian Lexian’s white pants, and upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a thin little girl.
She looked dirty and left dark marks on Jian Lexian’s clothes.
“Brother, I’m so hungry.”
Jian Lexian, feeling irritated, pushed her away impatiently and muttered under his breath, “You’re filthy.”
He managed to keep his voice low.
The other team members, a few steps behind him, didn’t notice the situation.
Jian Lexian pushed her away and walked off.
The little girl stood awkwardly in place, her head down as she rubbed her palms together, trying to make herself a bit cleaner.
At that moment, her vision suddenly darkened.
The little girl looked up in confusion.
A remarkably beautiful face appeared before her, so stunning that it felt somewhat unreal. She stared wide-eyed at the newcomer.
Tong Sui said softly, “Little friend, what are you doing here?”
He reached out to pat her head.
The little girl suddenly remembered something and took a step back.
Tong Sui’s hand grasped at nothing.
He wasn’t angry and smiled, saying, “Don’t be scared, I mean no harm.”
“Brother, I’m too dirty…”
As she spoke, her stomach let out a few growls. She blushed and nervously clutched at her clothes.
It had been a long time since she had a proper meal.
“Here,” Tong Sui offered his apple and milk. “I just ate too much, and can’t finish this. But we can’t waste food, can you help me eat it?”
The little girl hesitated for a few seconds, then cautiously reached out to take it. “Thank you, brother. I can’t just take your things; I can help you work.”
She looked to be about six or seven years old, her thin frame accentuating her large, beautiful eyes that sparkled with determination.
Tong Sui said, “Then let’s chat for a bit.”
The little girl nodded vigorously.
Jiang Hua, walking in front, stopped and quietly observed the scene.
The sunset bathed the steps in a warm glow; the little girl drank from the milk carton greedily, while the researcher with dark hair tilted his head, his eyes softened behind his glasses.
“What’s your name?” Tong Sui asked.
“My name is Nana.” The little girl stopped after drinking more than half the milk.
“Why did you stop eating?”
Nana hugged the apple and half-empty milk bottle tightly. “Grandma works very hard outside; I want to save some for her.”
Every safe base was like this; ordinary people without abilities had to struggle hard to survive.
Nana didn’t forget her mission to chat and continued, “My mom and dad went to the army; I can only stay with Grandma. They all say I’m an unwanted child, but I don’t believe it.”
Her head hung low, and her princess dress was already dirty.
Tong Sui placed his hand on her head and comforted her, “Don’t listen to them; your mommy and daddy love you very much.”
Then they heard footsteps approaching.
Jiang Hua walked over with a blank expression.
Nana trembled a bit and shrank behind Tong Sui.
“Brother, he looks scary.”
Tong Sui chuckled lightly, “Don’t be afraid, he’s my friend and a very good captain!”
Nana slowly moved out a bit upon hearing this.
Jiang Hua had an intimidating aura that felt dangerously cold from a child’s instinct.
He said nothing, raising his hand to toss a heavy bag over.
Tong Sui caught it.
The bag contained various types of food, water, and a small bag of crystal cores.
“Captain Hua,” Tong Sui hesitated, “Is this for Nana?”
Jiang Hua didn’t answer his question, simply stating, “It’s getting late; we should head back.”
“Okay.”
Tong Sui tied up the bag and handed it to Nana, “We’re going back now; take care of these things and give them to Grandma, understood?”
Nana nodded lightly.
Tong Sui stood up and dusted off his clothes.
It wasn’t until they had walked a few meters away that Nana, clutching the heavy bag, exclaimed loudly, “Thank you, brother and Captain brother!”
Tong Sui waved, “Hurry back now.”
The little girl nodded seriously, excitedly clutching the heavy supplies and running away.
Tong Sui glanced at Jiang Hua and asked, “Was it alright to give her those things? Don’t we have daily food rations for the team?”
Jiang Hua replied, “Yes, these are personal supplies.”
For powerful ability users like Jiang Hua, the Huabei base provides supplies as a basic strategy to keep people around.
Tong Sui nodded with a slight smile, “Captain Hua is more generous than I am.”
His own ring space was completely empty.
It seems he should try to find some seeds tomorrow to see if they can grow in the space’s soil.
The two approached the room assigned to them.
Whether it was coincidence or something else, their room allocation was similar to before, still close to each other.
Tong Sui said “See you tomorrow” to Jiang Hua and pushed the door open to enter.
Inside the room were a few iron-framed beds.
With beds on top and tables below, it appeared to be an old student dormitory.
Fortunately, the walls and floors were clean, and the sheets were freshly laid, smelling only faintly of laundry detergent.
